Emika brings her latest album "HaZe" to Gretchen.
Since the turn of the millennium, Emika has been creating electronic and neo-classical music, combining her skills as a sound designer, classically trained composer and prolific singer-songwriter. Her album 'HaZe' is a vibrant mix that channels influences from Thom Yorke, Burial and Nils Frahm, yet flows seamlessly as a single piece. It has it all - neo-classical descending melodies, her signature whispered vocals, icy pianos, deep sub-basses and layered, hazy beats. "HaZe" also tells Emika's personal story between two cities, a journey documented by voice memos of her piano and voice through moving boxes to the Black Forest. It's a tapestry of Ableton loops, lyrics, melancholy and melody, beautifully woven together.
Emika started making music at an early age with a 4-track cassette recorder, combining classical piano with electronic and sampling techniques. She went on to study Creative Music Technology at Bath Spa University. Immersed in Bristol's bass music scene, she was inspired by trip-hop and the emerging dubstep movement. After moving to Berlin, she worked as a sound designer for Native Instruments. Her first two albums, 'Emika' (2011) and 'Dva' (2013), were released on Ninja Tune. To date, she has released eight critically acclaimed albums, tirelessly exploring new sounds from an endless realm between dream and reality, where sound, emotion and movement intertwine in a dazzling vortex.
Special guests are Chloe Lula and Schlindwein. Chloe Luna, a Berlin-based DJ and producer who grew up in San Francisco, is known for her deep and atmospheric sound that pulls from the niche recesses of techno. A classically trained cellist, she immersed herself in the world of electronic music and rave after graduating. Today, she uses the cello to write full-length ambient, electroacoustic live shows as well as deconstructed tones and timbres. Schlindwein is a composer, pianist, producer and sound reformer, usually all at once. Based in Berlin, he lets the city's atmosphere inspire his piano compositions, bringing house beats, dreamy synths and smooth bass pads to the screen in streamlined tracks.
